Life is a Rhyme
James Schlegelmilch
James Schlegelmilch
James here. I will start with a brief explanation,
A name’s fine and good, but it isn’t enough.
I’ve always been James, since the nine months gestation,
But now, more than then, James is full of good stuff.
I hope I’m more now than I was as a kid,
I’ve learned a few things in the years that have gone.
Some good things have come from the things that I did.
The bad things I did, I choose not to dwell on.
I’m second of nine, but I’m boy number one.
My sister is older and was from the start.
Then me. Then my brother, my folks’ favorite son.
(I too love my brother with all of my heart.)
Then, being outnumbered, my mom and dad chose,
To have some more children. Three wasn’t enough.
My relevance shrunk, as the child count rose,
My childhood was equal parts easy and tough.
The worst part of living as first son of three,
Was taking the blame for the things that went bad.
For two little brothers, and six sisters, see,
I took all the heat from my mom and my dad.
They tried to ignore me, but couldn’t for long.
Though second of nine, I wasn’t ignorable.
I did many right things, and many things wrong,
But no one denies, I was cute and adorable.
With all of that written, I will not complain,
My childhood was good, though it’s far in the past.
And though there are mem’ries, that cause me some pain,
The good ones are more. They’re the ones that will last.
Both forward and backward, I look at my life,
With eyes that see humor in good and bad times.
Life’s given me kids, and a wonderful wife,
The stories to tell, and I tell them with rhymes.
So that’s what I’ll do. I will tell. I will rhyme.
I’ll tell all my stories of laughter and joy.
There isn’t much better a use of my time,
Than sharing my stories, for you to enjoy
